QIF is an acronym for Quicken Interchange Format, a protocol (or set of rules used by computers) used to transfer data.

A Quicken Interchange Format (QIF) file is a specially formatted American Standard Code for Information Interchange (ASCII) text file. It is used to transfer data between different Quicken data files, from a financial institution's.

Within the Quicken File menu, the Export function automatically creates a QIF file that can be imported into other Quicken data files. The following apply:

• The QIF file must have a name between three and eight characters in length followed by the .qif extension for the Quicken program to recognize it.
  
  
• A QIF file can be edited in any text-editing program. In Microsoft® Windows®, use Microsoft® Notepad, and in Macintosh®, use Simpletext.
  
  
• QIF files may need to be edited when moving files from a Quicken for Windows program to a Quicken for Mac program.

Although Intuit originally developed QIF, and certain Intuit products (including this product) still contain the ability to import or export files in QIF format, Intuit does not endorse or provide support for this format.
